This year long project is a celebration of the word cunt. It is a bit of a contentious word and people do tend to either love it or hate it. I find myself decidedly in the loving it camp and have done for as long as I can remember. I have never really understood why it is considered to be such a controversial insult, as I believe there are far worse things to be called - such as insults that are specific to a particular race, gender, sexual orientation, religion etc. Cunt doesn’t single people out - anyone can be a cunt. Calling someone a cunt really shouldn’t be any worse than calling them a dick.
I’ve always thought it was how you use a word that was more important than the word itself. I remember asking a friend how to say cunt in German, to which she replied “In Germany it’s considered to be a really bad word.” I told her that it was also considered to be a really bad word in England. She laughed and said “Not the way you use it.” So, it is in the spirit of cunt not being considered to be a bad word that I embarked on this project.
The project is to make a postcard depicting the word cunt, every day, for the whole of 2021. That’s 365 different postcards to be made - using graphic design, photography, photo manipulation and craft. Some are inspired by particular days of celebration, some by what is in the news but most are just inspired by what is in my head at any given moment. I will be updating the website on a monthly basis but feel free to follow on Instagram or Twitter for a daily cunt. Also, I am hoping to add a submissions page to the website, so please feel free to submit your own cunt postcards and help make 2021 the year of the cunt.
